log cabin plans The wonderful thing about log cabins are that they can be built by yourself, in a summer, and you get to enjoy the fruits of your labours for a lifetime! Log homes are growing in popularity in North America and around the world. The abundance of natural timber in Canada and the Northern United States make these the natural homes for the traditional log cabin. And architectural log cabin plans are very inexpensive, coming in around the $500 mark for fully speced plans - that is much better than the 30% cut an architect would like! But log cabins these days are not all traditional. Indeed, may are far from traditional! There are multi-level log homes. Log cabins with saunas and steam rooms, large balconies - even waterslides! (Go figure) So really, whatever you are after in terms of a style of life can, within reason, be accommodated by the humble log. Of course, with the growing awareness of climate change, more and more people are concerned to make their homes energy efficient and carbon neutral. Logs are brilliant at this! A process known as carbon sequestration occurs when a tree grows - what this means is that carbon (CO2) from the air is taken into the tree, and (basically) turned into wood. This is then trapped in the log until it is burnt or degrades very slowly over time. So in terms of being eco-friendly, log cabins are a great way to go! Just make sure that you plant more trees from where you fell them! Keep sequestering carbon! I've added some links below to where you can find out more about log cabin plans and how to design them.
